Must... write... fic... - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Must... write... fic...
To those breathlessly awaiting the next installment of The Hidden Face, it's still delayed, while I figure out a good timeline. It's been a little over week. I think I had a three-week break in Shifts before I finally ended up doing, like, 2000 words a day for a couple of months to finiish it, so I don't think that means it's hopeless. I know where Shmi's going, what's happening, etc. Alas, my brain got caught up in an O.C.'s story somewhere along the line, then started wondering about something entirely different. (What if, in the course of a mission, Obi-Wan had met his natural parents but didn't recognize them, but Anakin--around fourteen or fifteen in the era I'm thinking about--knew perfectly well who they were, or at the very least is able to figure it out? I'm not ready to write that one yet, but I think I eventually will. I think it's going to be a Family Portrait sequel, though Siri-less because I'll swallow all the lava on Mustafar before using Ferus the Twit. Unless I get paid for it, anyway. For those wondering how I got there from The Hidden Face, I'll just say there was good guessing going on in the comments. Though I guess my writing wasn't subtle.)

I'm not writing HP fic until July 16, when hopefully I will finish the book, and will try to get a vignette up that night. Just because. ;p

Of course, that would be a poor time to do it, as it would compete with people reading, you know, canon. Hmmm. Perhaps I'll stick to SW-fic until, like, a week after.

Meanwhile, I am going to get back to things. I tried a few times here, but nothing was really coming. Possibly something short and Luke-ish.

I like Ferus! He's sort of like Hermione to Anakin's Draco.

What I like most about Ferus is the fact that he's one of the few padawans who isn't blinded by Anakin's status as the "Chosen One". He stands up to Anakin when someone needs to, and he sides with him on those rare occasions when Anakin is right. After Obi's angsty padawanship and Anakin's severly troubled childhood, it's good to see a fairly normal and well-adjusted Jedi, IMHO.

And then there's the whole gay thing later, which just completely rocks my socks, of course! ;-)

Who in JQ respects Anakin? Not even the author respects him or treats him as a decent character. Ferus exists only to be Jude Watson's idea of what the chosen one should be, since she doesn't like Anakin.

I thought Watson dealt wonderfully with Anakin. As much as I enjoyed the "Jedi Apprentice" series, I loved the "Jedi Quest" series even more. Watson did an excellent job of portraying the conflicting longings within Anakin: his desire to be a great Jedi, his envy of the relationship Obi-Wan had with Qui-Gon, his need for approval. His mistakes were never made for evil reasons. Really, it's a lot like the Harry Potter dynamic, with a kid who has incredible powers that no one knows quite what to do with. The difference, of course, being that we know Anakin is doomed to turn Dark Side eventually. I think you're completely off-base to say she hated Anakin. On the contrary, she drew a very complex portrait of him that was sympathetic, even at the same time that you could see him heading down a dark path.

I also disagree with you about Ferus. He was there to be a counterpoint to Anakin, but I don't think he was ever portrayed as the ideal "chosen one." She could have dropped him when the series ended. I'm so glad he's in the new series, and I'm looking forward to see how life has turned out for the "perfect" Jedi who left the Order.

You know, I just realized you said "Draco"! I was automatically translating that to "Harry"--since Anakin's the hero--and trying to figure out how they were working together, since at last check-in (and I admit, I stopped reading JQ when it turned into a litany of how evil Anakin is and how Ferus is always right), and I couldn't make heads nor tails of the comparison.

I can see it as you put it, but that also explains everything about why I hate Ferus--Watson uses him to show Anakin being wrong about everything, just as Draco is wrong about everything while Hermione is right about everything. He's the ideal student, while Anakin is just a snobby little nothing. I mean, if she really has people being impressed at Anakin's Chosen One status, there's a problem--even at his most boastful--even when he thinks he desperately needs something that his status might be able to get--Anakin never in canon plays the "Chosen One" card.

I'd love to read that Anakin/Obi-Wan story. :)

You could still use Siri and ignore the exsistence of the Twit.

Nah. Siri fairly exists in the JA/JQ universe. I may include her name in passing, but if I'm going to include her, I'd have to include her JQ experiences. It kind of sucks, but that's the way it is.

Lord, I hate that miserable Gary Stu. "Let's just displace Anakin in every aspect, so I don't have to write him, because he's TEH E3IL!" Grrr.

It will be a long story. I must take a deep breath and see if it's all in there somewhere. I think it is, but I'm not sure. I think Daj Orti (the Neimoidian from FP) is also present. I need a cause to get everything going, then... we'll see.

Looking forward to your story. :)

I thought Watson's portrayel of Anakin was lazy. To her, he was Vader from day one and I think she had little sympathy for the character. I like the idea that Anakin wasn't destined to fall but fell because of the choices he made What annoyed me too was how poorly she portrayed his relationship to Obi-Wan. By Ep 3, you can see his relationship with Obi-Wan has become very close. Most of the Clone Wars EU reflected this while Watson kept driving them further apart.

The Clone Wars EU provided a much better and much deeper portrayel of Anakin. He's a complex, screwed-up individual with a dark side to be certain but also a good man and hero.

Ferus was Watson's Gary Stu to replace Anakin. He's always right about everything and only he, the Great One, can see that Anakin is going to fall to the dark side. Now Ferus the Great, the second most powerful padawan ever, the padawan Obi-Wan wishes he could have had, the man who founded the Rebel Alliance has taken over as the star of the Last of the Jedi series. This is a Stu.

::waves the flag of Luke-ish love:: Please?

Though I must warn you, it may turn into an epic. Luke does that.

I wouldn't worry about that so much--there's no way I'm going anywhere *near* LJ between the time I get that book in my hands and the time I slam it shut after the last chapter.

Not that I would mind Luke-fic at all, understand.

Ooh, I've been wanting an Obi-meets-his-parents fic for a while now. Don't ask me why - it's a pretty random fic-craving, but I have been trying to find one, and I haven't been able to. If you wrote one, that would just be incredible, because I love everything you write.

(And I agree about steering clear of JA and JQ stuff - I haven't actually read JQ so I don't know anything about Ferus, but the existence of Xanatos was frustrating enough for me to eventually decide to disregard most of the series.)

I haven't looked at the Summary Executions yet, but I keep wondering if this is some sort of parody of the Draco Trilogy, since in that story Draco was evidently possessed by Spike, along with a multitude of similar issues....

Ooo, Luke-fic! Any particular era that you're thinking of? I'd love to see more of your Jedi Master Luke, in the post-Penitent stuff.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: July 12th, 2005 07:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, the one I was thinking of involved him running into a kid (now an adult, obviously) who survived the Temple raid... who senses another presence hovering around and is not in the least bit interesting in joining up with the cause.

Oo, sounds good to me!

I think that's a great idea.
