Well, I just posted an entry in the Quill's Remus and Tonks "The Discussion" challenge. (I'm after calico, who has a nice entry with good imagery.) Both have spoilers. Comments go in a different thread there--the story thread is for stories only--or feel free to comment here, if so inclined. Well, for me, anyway. Calico wouldn't get things here very well. ;)

Oh, and it includes some of the thoughts on what I'm doing in the HBP-year continuation of the Shifts-verse will be. It's actually kind of coming together in my head. May I say that, for someone who had a major story totally Jossed by it, I'm thoroughly enjoying the presence of Fenrir? What an evil, evil thing. He's like Bellatrix, except for werewolves, and I truly enjoy Bellatrix as a villain as well.

And, btw, I cleaned up Flames a bit and put it at SQ. It still has spoilers regarding Remus, though most of it is my speculation on what the book has him doing... it still does mention what the book has him doing, ya know?

Okay, it's time I admit something rather monumental. I have no idea what "Jossed" means. I mean, I've got a vague idea from context, but honestly, wtf? There are a bunch of other fandom terms I don't get either, and I'm resolving to ask about them when they come up from now on because why should I be embarrassed?

"Jossed" comes from the Buffy-verse, referring to Buffy guru Joss Whedon. "Being Jossed" means that the creator and proper owner of the show has put something into canon that contradicts what's in a fanfic you've written--you can't really complain because, well, it's his/hers, but you kind of have to say, "Oops, oh well." I'd been using "obsoleted," but I just like "Jossed." It feels more fandomy.

Good, that's pretty much what I figured, but it's nice to know for sure. Whenever I don't understand something fandomy, I have to laugh because so many of my friends think I'm seriously into it. It makes me think, "if they only knew what a dilettante I am."

It's much more succinct, and actually much more fic-specific, and generally sounds better. I feel peculiar using it in fandoms he's got nothing to with, though, more so since I'm not even IN any of the ones he's responsible for!

Most people's names don't verb as well, do they....

Actually, it's rather interesting that that's the way "Jossed" is defined now. because I've been a long-time Buffy fangirl (and I was so sad to see it go...), but once upon a time, a very long time ago, Jossed had a very different meaning. There was a time that being Jossed meant that you wrote something in a fic, and then later on the same or a very similar thing actually happened on Buffy.

No idea why the meaning changed, but it confused me immensly when everyone was complaining about their fics being Jossed, and I was wondering how on Earth they could interpret it that way.

Huh. Yeah, I bet that would be confusing. :)

I do believ I spent about a week in which my main train of thought was solely "WTF?"
persephone_kore From: persephone_kore Date: July 27th, 2005 03:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
*laughs* I think I must've come in too late to pick up the original meaning.

It wasn't a really wide fandom thing, it was just a small, within the Buffy fandom (and then mostly on a few specific sites) Oh, and about 5, 6 years ago maybe.

I'm curious though, does Joss have a particularly strong habit of throwing in twists which disrupt fic-verses? More so than other writers/world-builders?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: July 27th, 2005 04:35 am (UTC) (Link)
He likes to break up couples, but I think it's mainly caught on because it's easy to verb his name.

Since the Buffy/Angel fandom obviously features a number of vampires as important characters (Angel and Spike, especially), people might write a particular backstory or past adventure for one of them that would be completely contradicted in a flashback in a later episode. Things about other characters and aspects of the world have changed, too, as in most fandoms, but it's more common when you have a handful of characters ranging from 120ish to 1100ish (not counting the humans).

It's (mostly) a closed canon, now, so it's pretty well moot, but the term stuck, probably because it sounds good. (The mostly comes from interviews and such, as well as comic books and other things which are occastionally considered canon by some people if they get Joss's approval -- someone on my flist posted a comment about this and one of his fics *today*, in fact.)

Oh, and now I've read the fic and love it. Enough seriousness to feel appropriate, but still humorous enough to sound like Tonks getting back to normal. I especially like your take on Remus's behavior while with the werewolves. It was shocking and sickening, but still not hate-inducing. Who thought cannibalism would make a good comprimise?

Not a Quiller, but I'm dropping you a line to let you know how much I enjoyed your submission The Discussion challenge. Top notch!

I can't wait to read your HBP parallel novel-thing... especially if this is what is coming at the end of it. I liked the beginning where she asks him if they are going to have this conversation again. I do so love your Remus and your Dora. It was funny that while I was reading HBP, my first thought on reading that Fenrir was the one to bite Remus was, 'There goes Fern's story.' No useful comments... just happy to be reading what you are writing.

Long time reader, I'm now just getting bold enough to offer thanks. Lovely. Thank you for sharing, again. But, what happened to R & T in March? Is this a story yet to be told?

It's a story yet to be told, probably during the course of the long project I'm gearing up for. The implication in this story is, er, more or less what happens in that particular snapshot.

Splendid! I was worried I had missed a ficlet or something, post Shifts!

PS: Thanks for the delurk! No need to be overbold, I generally don't bite. :)

I dunno about the being Jossed -- after Remus takes up with the pack, his outlook on the romance could change...
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: July 27th, 2005 01:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
It was "Lines of Descent" that got Jossed... the story about Remus and the werewolf who bit him, who was a very nice lady named Elizabeth. Shifts, to my utter shock, still mostly works.

I love the way that you write Dora and Remus. This particular bit is especially lovely.
