Dear Taylor - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Dear Taylor
Nails on a blackboard.

"Soul patrol! Soul patrol! Soul patrol!"

Stop. Cheering. For. Your. Damned. Annoying. Self. It's tacky and it makes my teeth itch.

Oddly, other than that, I have no comment on AI. This is the most boring AI final yet.

I feel a bit...: irritated irritated

Why is he trying to arrest souls? (He's probably not, but that's what it sounds like.)
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2006 01:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Hee-hee-hee. I like that interpretation.

I just think he's really very enamored of the fact that he has a fan club, to an unseemly degree.

It really seemed like each of the last four has been really excited about their own fan clubs. Which was rather irritating, from each of them.

I think I missed the ep where the whole Soul Patrol thing started. How does that refer to him?

But yeah, it was a pretty boring finale.

They're his fan club. Screaming "Soul patrol!" is the same thing as chanting "Yay, Taylor, Yay, Taylor!"

EW, I hadn't watched this season at all, and...wow, I really dislike that guy. Awful!
From: arclevel Date: May 24th, 2006 04:28 am (UTC) (Link)
Sometimes he sings wonderfully. And sometimes, he just sounds awful.

I personally adore Taylor, but to each his own.
prplhez8 From: prplhez8 Date: May 24th, 2006 01:22 am (UTC) (Link)
I personally like Taylor, too and was quite proud of his performance.

But again, to each his own.

fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2006 01:26 am (UTC) (Link)
His performance was all right (both contestants strike me as all right); it was that after-thing that has my hair standing on end. The self-hugging and self-cheering all season has bugged me on the whole "Don't raise a glass to yourself" angle. I don't like it when hip-hoppers do it either.
prplhez8 From: prplhez8 Date: May 24th, 2006 01:38 am (UTC) (Link)
I understand that you have a point of view that is completely different than mine: what is self congratulations to you is celebration to me. I enjoy the enthusiasm and vitality that he brings to this competition. Every contestant is cherished and hand picked for their different and unique qualities - and we will never ever be able to predict how America will vote.

I guess the part that bothers me most is that you have people who admire you and respect your opinion and that they might be Taylor fans and calling them out like this might hurt their feelings.

But then again, what do I know?

I'm just a Taylor fan.

fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2006 01:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Taylor fans aren't the ones annoying me. Taylor is.

I don't mean to hurt feelings, but the guy just irks me. I'd complain about Britney Spears if I knew much about what she was doing, too. I have no problem complaining about Peter Jackson or R.L. Stine or Dave Pelzer or Harlequin novels--I've never pulled back on giving my opinion of anything. It's not calling people out; it's just expressing my own opinion. YMMV, but I haven't exactly made a habit of tiptoeing around things that annoy me in the past, so I didn't see any reason to do so with Taylor Hicks.
buongiornodaisy From: buongiornodaisy Date: May 24th, 2006 01:47 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah. Fern can be a little rough on Taylor, but I haven't taken it personally, and it's not like I'm light on other contestants, either.

Anyhow, I don't see anything wrong in Fern expressing her opinion, especially if she isn't attacking his fans.
prplhez8 From: prplhez8 Date: May 24th, 2006 01:55 am (UTC) (Link)
As for Britney Spears, I'd complain about what she is doing too. That is maybe one thing we can agree on. And I'm not saying expressing your opinion is wrong. It's never wrong. And I have a right to express my different opinion.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this particular subject.

It happens every day.

I might even post about in my journal so you can post your opinion there.

Wait... you like my writing, but I'm not nefariously influencing your vote! I mean--you're really ruining a good advertising strategy here. Next you'll tell me that your political votes won't be influenced by who Barbra Streisand endorses, and how far after that can Armageddon be? ;)

I feel your pain. *stabs Taylor*

AI 3's final was just as, if not more, boring. I think I'll watch the country music awards instead and just watch the finale tomorrow.
stephantom From: stephantom Date: May 24th, 2006 02:58 am (UTC) (Link)
I hadn't watched any of this season, except for a few snatches here and there, but I watched it tonight because I couldn't think of anything else tod do as I waited for "House" to come on (and I told my mom about 10 minutes into that, "I feel like things in this episode aren't real...") and yeah, that was probably my main reaction. Annoyance at Taylor for continuously chanting that, I mean.
From: arclevel Date: May 24th, 2006 04:35 am (UTC) (Link)
I really liked the first two performances but wasn't particularly blown away by either. I was completely unimpressed by the last four. They had their moments, certainly, but overall, I don't think any of those songs was sung well, and I didn't really like the song for either of their debut singles (though Taylor's was better).

I really didn't understand why they were redoing songs, though. Especially Katharine, who did two for no apparent reason.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2006 04:54 am (UTC) (Link)
I think they both did two--I gather from the judges' comments that Taylor had also done that Elton song before. Katherine just did two that were a lot closer to when we're hearing them again, which, imho... mistake. It's one thing to hear something and say, "Oh, yeah, I remember liking that... I'd almost forgotten about it!" and another altogether to say, "Wait a minute... didn't she do that last week?"
wendynat From: wendynat Date: May 24th, 2006 10:50 am (UTC) (Link)
Exactly! Hers were far too recent to re-use, IMO. Then again, we always Tivo it and I end up fast-forwarding through her stuff because she bores me to tears. There's nothing really "different" or stand-out about her - she has a nice voice, but I don't know that it's a pop voice. I could see her doing Broadway shows or singing Disney songs for a soundtrack.

Taylor's entertaining to watch, but I do wish it was Chris in the finals instead. Marketing him, if he wins, will be a challenge for Simon, methinks.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2006 04:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, I voted Katherine, but she does bore me. It's sad that after a pretty good season, I'm down to voting for the boring one because the other one actively irritates me. Democracy at work--indifference vs. dislike, the grudge match! Sadly, as I voted for "indifferent" rather than just tuning out, I think that means dislike has already won.

Your icon is very distracting.
From: arclevel Date: May 25th, 2006 05:53 am (UTC) (Link)
Levon was actually the one of Taylor's I remembered; I must have missed the week he did the other one. Katherine's second, that she did last week, was definitely way too close, but Black Horse and the Cherry Tree probably would have been okay.

I actually really like Levon, and I think it *ought* to be something that Taylor would pull off well, but he sounded pretty bad -- and I think he did the first time he sang it, too. I didn't like the song for either of their new singles *and* I didn't think that they were sung well, so I think those are two singles I won't be buying.

Now that I've seen the finale, I thought Katharine sang *much* better tonight, when the songs didn't count, than she has in any of the last three (at least!) competition days.
purple_ladybug1 From: purple_ladybug1 Date: May 24th, 2006 08:17 pm (UTC) (Link)
I thought they both did just an okay job. I didn't watch the whole thing. But one thing I think a lot of people don't keep in mind is that by the finale, contestants' voices are burned out. Kelly Clarkson sounded awful singing "A Moment Like This" at her finale, and now she's amazing and has a Grammy.

As far as the self-cheering, it doesn't bother me. But that's just me.
