OC meme, again - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
OC meme, again
Well, chapter 19 of Shades ("Guard Duty") is up at SQ, with the conversation with Bill tweaked to better fit Fleur's later behavior toward Tonks.

I decided to do the OC meme about my version of the Lupinlets--Mira, Orry, and Carina (seen most prominently in Gens Lupina--just because I'm having a bit of trouble mapping out events for the next couple of chapters of Shades, but I still feel like writing. But instead of just saying things, I'm going to let them speak for themselves. Here are ten things each of them might say. If you have any questions for them, "they" will be glad to answer. ;)

Mira Andromeda Lupin
  • I'm not just the eldest of my siblings. I'm the eldest of my generation. The first of the post-war crop. Does that mean something?
  • It was really fun being an only child. I never understood what we needed Orry for. Mum wouldn't even let me dress him up.
  • The best part of being a 'Puff is that no one ever suspects you of anything.
  • Being Regan Weasley's best friend is a full time position. Have you ever tried to keep up with someone who's half Uncle Ron and half Aunt Hermione? When I'm not kept busy trying to save the world from unethical politicians, I have to know every score of every Quidditch game on the planet just to follow a conversation.
  • Someone I would kill? I don't know. If it was before he did anything wrong, that wouldn't be fair and might make a lot of changes I wasn't expecting. If it was after, would it make any difference? Obligatory philosophy out of the way, are you kidding me? Fenrir Greyback. I'd bring him back to life and kill him as many times as magic would allow it.
  • Daddy's the only person who always makes me feel safe. I could be in the middle an epidemic with a Muggle bomb aimed straight at my head, and if Daddy happened along, I know he'd get me out of trouble. But don't tell him I said that. He'd kill me.
  • I've never understood why people always look at me. Honestly, I'm nothing special, and I can list a dozen women--including my own sister--who are prettier than I am. I wish they'd look at someone else.
  • I didn't really think about becoming a Healer. I just kept showing up at St. Mungo's until someone decided to just make me an Apprentice, for heaven's sake.
  • Marrying a Muggle? I suppose it's not that different from marrying a wizard, except that he actually has to bend over when I tell him to pick up his towels in the bathroom. Which I tend to magically push off their hooks now and then. He's very cute bent over.
  • Might I strongly suggest that you never disparage any member of my family while I'm in earshot?

Orion (Orry) John Lupin
  • I have two pretty sisters. You'd be shocked how many blokes want to be my friend.
  • You know, someday one of us really will be in Ravenclaw, instead of just having the Hat hem and haw that it's a possibility with all of us. It was sure of it while it was busy sorting me into Gryffindor.
  • Mum says that being a metamorphmagus can't solve my problems for me. Personally, I'd be happy if it would just stop adding interesting little twists to them.
  • I usually keep myself at least a little morphed, to avoid looking like several Death Eaters and one innocent fugitive. But I draw the line at Mum's weird hair colors. I'm not going to turn my hair green just to avoid looking like some bloke named Regulus who I never even met.
  • Professor Binns isn't so bad, really. I had him for seven years. Knows just about everything there is to know. As long as you drink quite a lot of tea or coffee before class, you can usually stay awake through it.
  • I suppose that being a Potions-maker wouldn't have been my first choice, but when I found out that being knighted these days wouldn't involve dressing up in armor and questing for obscure magical objects, I decided to change my career path.
  • I did not marry Rachel for her money, and I wish to God people would stop bandying that around. I was in the States working with her father's company, and I didn't even know she was his daughter when I fell in love with her. I thought she was a laboratory technician. She didn't even tell me she was wealthy until after she'd accepted the proposal.
  • And sorry, Mum, Dad, Uncle Harry, and Aunt Ginny... Violet Potter and I never had the slightest interest in your plans for us. Not that she's not a damned good friend.
  • My wife, Rachel, keeps trying to encourage one of the boys to take the Black family name back, as there are quite enough of them to keep the Lupin name going. I've tried to explain that it's really not a bad thing for there to be no actual Blacks left, but she thinks it's very sad. I find that attractive, so I argue the point as often as I can.
  • Why holiday in Greenland? Well... we don't have to deal with the crowds, now, do we? (All right, it started out as an inside joke of Dad's and mine, but after he sent us there the first time, Rachel loved it.)

Carina Julia Lupin
  • I grew with two Hufflepuffs and two Gryffindors. If there's one slice of cake left, Mum and Mira would try to be generous and Dad and Orry would try to be noble. I, meanwhile, would just say, "Oh! Cake!" and take it. Guess which House I was Sorted into?
  • I don't know why everyone's surprised that Auntie Narcissa likes me. I look like her, and am I the only one who's noticed that her name is Narcissa?
  • I can't figure out how Slytherin ended up with so many pure-blood fanatics. It's the least useful attitude I can think of. Since when do ambitious people get sent to Azkaban over ideology? Honestly, Voldemort should have been a Gryffindor. Slytherins prefer holding the axe to sticking our necks out.
  • Mira is Dad's favorite. Orry is Mum's favorite. I'm Mira and Orry's favorite. This works out well for me.
  • I don't know why people think Slytherins don't like rules. Slytherins love rules. The other houses hate them, because they insist on thinking right past them. Hufflepuffs are always trying to make people happy. Gryffindors are always trying to imagine what great right a rule is trying to serve. Ravenclaws want the logic of the thing. We, on the other hand, love the rule as it stands. The more clearly and succinctly a rule is written, the easier it is to find a loophole that no one can challenge.
  • If I could pick any famous wizard in history to marry? Hmm. Gilderoy Lockhart. He's quite handsome, and not bright enough to get in my way. (Orry: She says that, but she only went out with my friends, who aren't stupid, and she married a genius. Carina: Shut up.)
  • Do I have ideals? Yes. They're even more or less the same as the rest of the family's--fair treatment, justice, the whole do, you know? I mean, would my parents have raised me without that? I just use my brain as well. For people with damned good brains, my family has a bad habit of not using them very often.
  • Yes, I did marry a Parkinson. Is that all right with you?
  • Being on Hogwarts' Board of Governors just isn't quite as exciting as Uncle Lucius made it sound.
  • My granddaughter married my brother's grandson? Good Lord, I really am a Black, aren't I?

Charming. Orion, and not Sirius? I think there's an explanation needed.

I'm afraid it's just author aversion to giving two characters the same name. ;) Transferred to Tonks and Remus who just thought it would be creepy to have someone named Sirius who's not, well, Sirius.

So, Orry, tell us a bit about Rachel, then (and no, that's not just because Rachel's my real name). Do you live in England or the US? And Carina: how is your Parkinson husband related to the rest of the clan (or more specifically Pansy, who's the only one we know). Mira: no one ever suspects you of anything? What sort of things have you done that deserve suspicion?

Orry: Rachel's brilliant and humble, and she has slippery hair that never stays in its clips while she's working, so she tends to come home with all sorts of interesting effects on it from her Potions. She wasn't trying to hide her money from me; it just never occurred to her to tell me that she was actually her father's daughter (assuming I'd guess from the name, but as I understand it, Cohen is not that rare, and with half the people in Wizarding England sharing names with people they aren't related to, I never thought twice). I wanted the children at Hogwarts, so we lived in Scotland while they were growing up (in Hogsmeade, not far from Mum and Dad), but we've maintained homes there, in London, in New York, and in Salem. It was a bit of a fight over the Salem Institute--Rachel's mother and grandmother went there--but they had a change of administration just before our eldest would have started, and she didn't like the direction it was going.

Carina: Pansy's Jake's aunt. His father was her older brother. She's mellowed a bit over the years, actually.

Mira: Nothing that's not in the interest of the greater good of humanity, I assure you. It's all very noble stuff. I'll work out just how that's so when I've had a bit of time for it...

Wait, how are they related to the Weasleys?

Mira is Regan's best friend, and presumbly all the adults still know one another.

I'm sitting alone in the middle of a dark lab surrounded by equipment that hums or goes click, and "Oh! Cake!" just made me completely crack up. Just so you know.

Oh that was funny, Fern! I particularly loved Carina's comments. My favourites (tied for first place):

"Oh, cake!"

"I really am a Black, aren't I?"

What a cool meme!

The best part of being a 'Puff is that no one ever suspects you of anything.

Everyone said brilliant things, but I have to say this was my favorite quote of all. ^_^

I really like this. :) Your Lupinlets are so spunky!

Just one question - Carina's grandkids and Orion's? I'm not sure what it refers to.

"Oh! Cake!" made me think that huh, maybe I *could* be a Slytherin, b/c that's SO me.

Even if I identify more with Carina, I think, I'm still obsessing over Mira and Daniel because they're so awesome. Do you remember where that drabble/ficlet thing you wrote about their meeting is?

I'm not Fern, but it's here. The second one she wrote, where Remus came to save them, that I don't know. :)

I'm a little surprised, considering the progression of their friendship in Shades that Mira's best friend Reagan is Ron and Hermione's daughter and not Bill and Fleur's daughter...but I love the voices of all your OCs and as the youngest of six, I can say that Carina is a great spoiled baby sister!
