HP canon question
Just quickly--

Does anything in HBP indicate who analyzed the poison that Ron accidentally drank?

As far as I remember, nothing.

I just skimmed the chapter and didn't see anything definitive on it.

Yeah, I don't know that it was ever analyzed. In fact, there may be some support that it wasn't: Slughorn has the rest of his wine tasted by house elves to make sure it's safe. He who is supposed to know about these kinds of things.

I don't think so.

Thus indicating the practicality of the by-the-book potions lesson in which they analyzed poisons and then painstakingly combined antidotes (taking into account Golpalott's third law) relative to the HBP's bezoar advice.

Actually, looking through HBP, there's quite a bit more about poisons there than I had remembered. Hermione's comment (re Dumbledore's withered hand) about poisons without antidotes, Mrs. Smith's cocoa, Slughorn's remark about house-elf testing at Aragog's funeral...

It doesn't actually say it was analysed as far as I can tell, but I think the assumption that it would have been makes the best sense. There's the scene later that day when Harry and the Weasleys are discussing who did it and how, and then I don't think Harry (and therefore the reader) hears any more detail, presumably so we don't know what happened and it can be a plot point?

As for who did, Slughorn himself would seem the obvious candidate, but you could imagine people being suspicious of Slughorn and getting someone else to do it. Inside the Order that would be Snape or (just possibly) Madam Pomfrey; if the incident was reported outside the school you could certainly have the Aurors doing it if that was the idea.

I wonder if the source of the poison was the stuff Lucius Malfoy was selling to Borgin in CoS? Or something he retained and Draco got his hands on that way?

I automatically assumed it was Snape, but I guess nothing tells us that for sure.

Hmm. I assumed that both Pomfrey and Slughorn would've analyzed it; didn't even consider Snape.

Hm... Pomfrey does say that Ron would have to take some potion or another for a few days (don't have the book at hand), so you'd expect that she had some knowledge of what had happened to Ron. Even if the Bezoar removed the poison outright, the specific aftereffects she had to treat were still based on the poison.

It doesn't say, but I'd guess Snape. It's obviously something that should be the ballpark of the Potions Master, but Sluggy was pretty much a basket case at that moment.

I think that that was essence of rue - which would be to make him throw it up again rather than cure it. :/
