Ouch. - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
I went to a NaNo write-in today, which was kind of an interesting thing to do--everyone sitting around writing, occasionally yelling out questions like "What's the average size of a room?" or whatnot. I got in my quota. Actually beat it by 179 words. 2179 words.

In longhand.

I paused at the end of each written page to tally up the words, but other than that, I was writing for about two and a half hours straight. I still haven't typed it up because, um, my fingers kind of hurt.

Yikes, ouch! The computer certainly spoils us for writing longhand, doesn't it? My husband writes best on paper; for every school project he does, or letters or anything, he'll camp out on the couch with a legal pad and then type up the finished product. My hands and wrists can't stand writing for longer than a few thank you notes these days. Pathetic.

If I come out of this with something I can sell, the advance gets me a laptop. ;p

Seriously, I'm typing it now, and aside from the ouch factor, I'm squinting at it, trying to figure out my own handwriting!

Hey, that's awesome! I've only gone to one write-in, and it was the kick-off. There were only three of us there, and since it was at midnight, we were pretty silent.

I used to write longhand a lot, because I'd write during classes at school and I obviously couldn't bring my computer with me. I wrote three entire novels longhand and typed them all. The longest is 370 pages double spaced. Yeah, definately some times when my hand hurt. Especially after history classes for some reason.

G'luck with your novel!

Longhand, wheee! :-) Welcome to my world; I still write all my first drafts in longhand pen (gels are great for this, as they can be moved quicker than ballpoint), with the exception of NaNo (because not having the opporotunity to pause and make marginal notes encourages me to plough through what I'm working on instead of think of "better" ways to do it).

Yay Fern! Thank goodness for computers, but writing by hand still occasionally has its uses. ;)
