The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Chapter 41 of Shades is up, with the timeline fixed, but I can't get it to show for me in Firefox. I just get the top of the SQ screen and a blank area. I've been getting that on chapter 1 for a while. I assume it can be reached on IE, since there's already a comment, and I can reach chapter 1 at work (ever since I downloaded IE7, IE hasn't been able to connect on my computer at home) despite it not being available at home, and the SQ tech people swear there's nothing wrong with the file from where they see it...

Do any other Firefox users have problems like this? Just random pages that utterly refuse to load properly? (Looking at the page source, it seems to just stop loading partway down the chapter drop-down menu and call it good.)

(And as far as IE7 goes... after I re-downloaded and reinstalled for forty minutes, thinking that something must have gone wrong, it's still refusing to connect, despite the fact that my connection is robust--the program just seizes up. Anyone know what's going on with that?)

It works for me. Maybe Firefox is just being finicky with you?

It came up perfectly for me.

IE 7 is a total waste for me. It's never worked properly. I dumped it.

I did, too, though I tried to re-install tonight in the hopes of reviewing the chapter so I could beat myself up about whatever stupid thing my eyes skipped over in five comb-throughs. :p I'm not all broken up about not having it, though my webmail from work (Microsoft-based) doesn't function quite right and I can't play Phantom of the Opera mahjongg.

OK, after much internet searching that returned only downloadable e-books... I have to ask... where does one find Phantom of the Opera mahjongg?

phantomgerry.net. There's also phantom Tetris.

Sweet! Looks like a great board too, fanfic and everything. :D Thanks!

I know you've had this problem before. I'm using the latest Firefox version and it's fine. Do you have everything updated? Maybe you need to uninstall and try again?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: April 5th, 2007 03:11 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, everything's up to date--I updated the last time. It's just the weirdest little glitch. I'm hoping someone else has had it and can tell me what it is and how to fix it; maybe I've got something going on like having a box checked in the security fields that shouldn't be or something (though that wouldn't explain everything else working great!). I'm going to look carefully at the HTML on those chapters; maybe I have some little glitch on them.

I pretty much see this when I click on chapter 1 or 41:

It worked for me, and I just got Firefox the other day.

Worked OK for me. Which version of FF do you have?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: April 5th, 2007 04:47 am (UTC) (Link) I tell it to look for updates, it says no updates available. Though when I checked the release notes, it said another version worked best with Vista, so I guess there's another version.

But it confuses me because there's nothing different between the chapters it shows and the chapters it doesn't!

Yeah, but the older versions of FF have a lot of display problems. Go here to download the newest version: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ which is :)

Yeah, I just took care of that, purged my cache again, and... it still doesn't show up. :(

I think I will just have to access stuff like that at work--it's not a huge hardship, as I have the actual files on my hard drive (hey, there's spellcheck on Firefox now, like whoa)--until I've scrimped enough to get a new computer. This one is six years old, which in computer terms is practically ancient, and I suspect something is just not properly gelling somewhere.

I have the identical version of Firefox, and it's loading successfully for me. So it's just you :-)

It's working for me on two computers, one with Firefox, one with 2.0.3, so sadly I think it might be your computer.

Loads OK with me too, using latest version of Firefox. I have fewer problems with Firefox than I did with IE. Is there a glitch in your other security settings?
shimotsuki From: shimotsuki Date: April 5th, 2007 02:02 pm (UTC) (Link)
I can see the page just fine with an embarrassingly old version of Firefox (1.0.7).

I'll have to download the chapter for later perusal...not being good with timelines, I didn't notice anything off the first time, but I'm looking forward to seeing how you've redone it.

Hmm, it loaded just fine in firefox for me. BTW, I recently re-read all the books, then re-read Shifts and Shades (since I wasn'tr eady to stop re-reading!), and was struck once more by how you've impacted my view of canon. Really amazing work, Fern.

Works for me in Firefox.
