THIS JOURNAL IS NOW SPOILED: TDH question - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
I asked this over at SQ's Canon Quick-Check thread, but I figured I'd throw the question as far as possible for response:

I didn't notice any mention of Gawain Robards, who was the head of the Auror Division in HBP after Scrimgeour was promoted, and would like to use him in my current story (and more when I start Safe), but if anyone else happened to spot him toadying around the Ministry during TDH, that kind of wouldn't work. So... any Robards sightings that I missed in Deathly Hallows?

I can't think of anything. You may want to reread the Trio's Ministry Raid to see if he pulls a cameo, but I don't recall anything.

Yeah, I checked there. I just figured it would be just my luck to carefully check that chapter, then find out that, I don't know, Griphook idly mentioned that rat Robards while staying at Shell Cottage. :p But, apparently he didn't! Yay! I will now play with Gawain.

I don't remember him popping up but just to check. I have a pdf of DH (Disclaime: I know it's terrible I have bought two copies but I nabbed pdf's of all of them off an audio book site when posted for rpg easy reference) putting both Robards and Robard into the find feature has no results so it seems he's not in it.

That's pretty definitive!

(You'd think they'd sell legal searchable versions of these things; they know how fen are--it would sell like hotcakes!)

I didn't notice anything. But JKR said something in an interview about Kingsley tapping Harry to head up the new Auror division--because the old one was all kinds of corrupt and it needed to be cleaned up. I don't know if she meant he headed it up immediately or if that was much later though.

Well, I need him for something else, so that's fine. :)

:) thanks again for waiting on the slowpokes among us before going spoilery.

You're welcome. No need to tweak noses I don't have to!

to add my affirmation... I just read it yesterday and he was never mentioned.

Kind of OT (even tough I can say, after rereading DH yesterday, that Robards isn't there), but I had to let you know how happy you made me by deciding to go on with Safe (eventually). There were so many times this book that made me think "I need to read Fernwithy's version of this scene" that I actually would feel like I was missing a piece of canon if there wasn't your version to complement it.
All that above is trying to say thank you for doing both Safe and the Forest Guard (I love Teddy. Warner should let you publish a new septalogy about Teddy. I'd read it). Er... I think that's all.

sorry for any thing that's unintelligible, my English doesn't cooperate with me.

Nope, don't remember seeing Robards anywhere. In fact, I was wondering why we didn't get to see any Aurors (besides poor Dawlish, of course). I'm guessing that the Aurors were either coerced (by Imperius or Confundus curses or blackmail), or they "resigned" like Scrimgeour. Some of them might have been power-hungry enough to voluntarily join DEs. Not sure which category Robards belonged to.

Gawain was the head of the Auror Department while Pius Thicknesse was head of the Depart of Magical Law Enforcement. I suppose you can go either way on Gawain, that he helped Voldemort and worked for him against his will. That would make hin an intriguing character with a past well-suited for the DADA post.

Did it actually say he was there? (The Safe storyline I have in mind would require him to leave, but the FG DADA storyline can survive if he was, though it would need some explanation.)

I'll be the second to say that my backup PDF copy (for purposes just like this, useful especially because I've loaned my paper copy to my mum) has no mention of Robards that I can search out.

I searched my pdf file as well, and neither Gawain, Robards, (or even Robard, in case he underwent an accidental name change) cropped up. I reckon you should be quite safe. :)

Wait, have I missed something? What's Safe? *is tentivly excited*

It's going to be the Shifts-verse Deathly Hallows take. Should be interesting to follow PoV characters beyond the veil. Yipes.

Ohhh excellent! Should be very interesting! And sad :'(

I imagine there was no Auror Division after the takeover. It was probably converted into the Snatchers or whatnot. It's not like Voldemort had much use for them. Seeing what the DE Ministry told the public would be interesting, though. "You see, we've decided that we don't really need these Aurors. It's not like there are any psychotic killers running about or anything."
