Spewing out too many words since November 2003
I missed an FFN review of "Of A Sort" (I was there uploading more chapters, and a new and improved version of "I Hear Him Laughing"), which was someone else saying, "Um, Ted Tonks is a Muggle."

No. Just, for the love of G-d, no. When has "Muggle-born" ever been used in these books to refer to someone who is just a Muggle? And it's used twice in regards to Ted, the only two times he's mentioned. (Nymphadora: "My dad's Muggle-born and he's a right old slob"--pg 50, OP: US; Sirius: "Andromeda's sisters are still here because they made lovely, respectable pure-blood marraiges, but Andromeda married a Muggle-born, Ted Tonks, so--" Sirius mimed blasting the tapestry with a wand and laughed sourly.--pg 113, OP: US)

Sorry, I know I've ranted about it before and am repeating myself, but it's crazy-making. Like I'd leave that big a mistake up and unchanged if someone caught it! Good Lord, it would be down as soon as I double-checked my book if it were right. Give me some credit, man!

I feel a bit...: annoyed VERY annoyed
Soundtrack: brain buzzing as it tries to escape through my ears...

Would it be easier to contain your brain if you simply treated unjustified complaints as flames?

Perhaps the reviewer is not familiar with your usual strict adherence to canon? Anyone who has read more than one of your stories knows that even your smallest details are correct as far as canon goes. I know that if I find something that I know is wrong, I will usually let the author know. However, I make absolutely sure I am right first, usually by checking the Lexicon.

As to the specific point of whether or not Ted Tonks is a wizard, I've found quite a few stories in which he is referred to as a muggle. So, your reviewer is not alone in his or her misapprehension. I've even let one author know about the error, but sadly, there was no response or change to the story.

Oh, I can screw up big time. I've just realized that there's no logical reason, canonically, for Peter to have been involved in the plot on Dudley during the GoF year, so I'm going to have to do some scrambling to fix the backstory in "Shifts." It's just that if something that blatant were wrong with the story and someone pointed it out, as soon as I stopped crying under my desk, I'd take it down and re-write. I certainly wouldn't put it up on a second site!

I think people get confused because of the word is badly positioned in OotP. Sirius says, "...but Andromeda married a Muggle-" and "born" doesn't appear until the next line. It's a strange word, so people don't think about it being hyphenated normally, or hyphenated at the end of a line, either.

Yeah, I'm sure that's why, though it peeves me that it's the second mention of him, not the first, and the first is all on one line, at least in the American edition. It's right during Tonks's introduction, which is a fairly large scene in the book--Harry being rescued by the Advance Guard--so it seems pretty blatant. Then again, I was on the watch for all Dursley comparisons when I read it, as I was working on a Petunia fic that never got written. So maybe all comments comparing the Dursleys to anyone got scrambled in my brain.

I think JKR would do better not to hyphenate, but it's a bit late to change that now. :)

Fern, I think that you're giving these people too much credit. Sirius isn't actually interrupted, he stops talking and mimes Andromeda's name being blasted off the tapestry.

"Andromeda's sisters are still here because they made lovely, respectable pure-blood marriages, but Andromeda married a Muggle-born, Ted Tonks, so--" (OotP Am. ed, 113)

So, unless I have missed some other instance where Ted's parentage is being brought up, it never even looks like someone is trying to call him a Muggle. I think that those who mistakenly read it that way are simply not reading very carefully. And the person who goes around correcting others when they are wrong should be shown there error and then if they continue, be politely ignored.
