You haven't seen the other Jackson movies?

At least see Return of the King. IMO, most of that one redeems the Stupid Screenwriting Choices (TM) in the other two. And it's way better than Cuaron's Azkaban...

On the other hand, if you thought Fellowship was painful and tears-of-rage worthy, it's not even in the same league as TTT which is an absolute and utter abomination.

True dat. See http://www.livejournal.com/users/scionofgrace/2004/06/17/
for my full list, but the movies still rock.

I thought the Fellowship movie was the best out of them, actually. At least in the theatrical edition - there weren't such GLARING plot holes as in RotK ("Wha? Eowyn and Faramir are alive? And they're engaged? I don't recall them ever meeting." "Lightning speed to the Black Gate!") Khazad-dum was just so enthralling, Bombadil was justly cut, Boromir's death was rightly transposed to it, and it's essentially the same as the book, really, with Cuaron-like modifications and MUCH BETTER screenwriters.

Now TTT, you're quite right, was a purist's abomination. The biggest outrage for me was Saruman's wholesale simplification, and a close second being the Elves showing up at Helm's Deep (yeah, yeah, PJ says his program refused to allow thw battle to be won without them, but they weren't so outnumbered in the book, why not keep it that way?!) Although Rohan was so much more alive in the movie than in the book. And if they ended it the way Tolkien did, then left people hanging for a year, there would be great upset.
